3rd International Juried Print Exhibition - Opening Night

Viewers crowd the 3rd International Juried Print Exhibition at New Grounds

Works by Manuel Lau, Riley Breen, Charles Barth and others!

On December 3rd, 2015, New Grounds Gallery hosted an opening reception for our 3rd International Juried Print Exhibition, which features work from more than 25 different artists from around the globe. This yearly event always offers an exciting, fresh look at the state of printmaking and is well attended by collectors, art lovers and other printmakers from our local community.

This year's exhibition drew quite a crowd and generated a lot of conversation about different printmaking methods. We are consistently impressed by the talented artists that submit work each year and it's always such a hard jury process.

Viewers admire work by Eun-ji Choi, Barbara Handler, Rosemary Mortimer and others!

The International exhibition is an exciting event for Albuquerque, as we're able to present new work to local collectors and art lovers. Some of the participants are globally recognized artists, others have the opportunity to show work for the first time in New Mexico, or in the United States, thanks to the event. The result is a talented array of ideas and techniques, rich in texture and concept.

We frame a selected piece from each artist, then have additional works on hand for buyers.

This year's group represents Canada, Mexico, Ukraine, South Korea, Japan, Argentina, Netherlands, Italy, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, the United States, and Estonia, Europa.

If you missed our opening reception, don't worry! We will be sharing videos of the installation, plus all of the work is viewable online on our 3rd International Juried Print Exhibition web page.

Because the exhibition features so many artists, we'll be sharing highlights here on the blog and on Facebook all month. We'll also be sharing videos of the installation for those who would like to see it, but can't make the journey to our space.

Krista Barrett Multi-Plate Etching Video

Krista Barrett's glowing personality and playful prints made for a great demo

On First Friday, October 2, 2015, New Grounds hosted an exhibition opening for printmaker Krista Barrett's newest series - Portals - Mixed Media Prints by Krista Barrett.

During the opening, Krista provided a fun, multi-plate etching demonstration, where she discussed her inking, registration and printing methods, as well as the playful way that she creates rich monoprints from a selection of plates cut to identical sizes. Krista inks each plate differently each time, then combines them in diverse ways, to create entirely unique 'portals' into new, colorful spaces.

Krista inks up the second plate using Akua non-toxic intaglio color
We have cut Krista's demo into a short video, viewable on our YouTube Channel (or view it below!).

Enjoy!

Body and Movement - Etchings by Brian Giza, Exhibition Opening Recap

A select grouping of Giza's portrait etchings

On August 7th, 2015 (First Friday) we held an exhibition opening and artist reception for our latest show, Body and Movement - Etchings by Brian Giza.

A master draftsman, portrait and figurative artist, Brian Giza can be found at ballet studios busily sketching the dancers as they put on their shoes, stretch and rehearse. He often works on the copper plates directly rather than sketching on paper first. An accomplished thespian and professor at UTEP, every moment in his life not teaching or performing Shakespeare is dedicated to making art. Giza’s dancers come very close in skill and expression to those of Manet.

Left - Line of Swans, drypoint on copper. Right - Landscape, etching.

Left - Tess in Lilac, 3-plate gravure. Right - Three in Snow, gravure.

Giza says of his own work:I am a former dancer and current balletomane whose work focuses on portraits, nudes, and the environment of the ballet.

My greatest joy in art is when I can discover, and then reveal some element of beauty to the model and to the viewer.  Because of my long association with the performing arts, capturing backstage moods, moments, and personalities is a thread that runs through my work.

Although some may see my background in art, science, theater, and dance history as eclectic, these disciplines are actually complementary...especially when rendering the art and science of dance in the printmaking medium.

Brian Giza also gave an excellent, live printmaking demonstration on the way he develops images on copper plates, inking and printing. Giza is fond of combining different kinds of intaglio approaches on the same individual plate surface, and he frequently returns to the same plates to continue developing the image over time.

Stay tuned for our video version of his demo! We'll be editing it and sharing it here on the blog in coming weeks.

Ren Adams Alchemy of Image/ The Language of Information Space

Artist and Teacher Ren Adams speaks with a close friend while setting up for her demonstration. Ren's images are meaningful and complex and are created through hybrid printmaking, using a variety of techniques such as screen printing, intaglio, stamping and lithography.

In addition to  Ren's show the Pastel Society of New Mexico had their Signature Membership Show in Matrix. Artist Mike Mahon demonstrated pastel painting the duration of the evening.

UNM print lab manager Brooke Stieger  greets Ren inside New Grounds. Many students and alumni from UNM printmaking came by excited to see Ren and congratulate her on the success of her show.

Ren is in additon to being a talented artist a wonderful teacher. In her upstairs studio she offers classes on drawing, book binding, and painting, she is also the instructor of the New Grounds screen printing workshops.
