In this predominantly blue-hued show of semi-abstract monotypes, Noyes investigates how we find sacred space both within us and within the landscape. Although his images are quiet and soothing, this is an exciting show with a personal message and a unique approach to the monotype medium.

First Friday Artscrawl Reception: February 6, 5 – 8:00 PM.

Demonstration during the reception: Dan Noyes will demonstrate the monotype process from 6:30 – 7 PM.

Non-toxic Photogravure/Solarplate-Etching
This four day workshop provides an exciting opportunity to create beautiful limited edition prints using two distinctly different methods. The first results in rich and detailed photographic images, the second is a great alternative to lithography for artists who love to draw!
Class date: Saturdays & Sundays, February 7, 8, 14 and 15
Class time: 9 AM - 5 PM, includes lunch break
Class fee: $ 275 + tax, includes two small plates, and all printing materials. Additional plates are available.

Jewels Portfolio on display at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts

When Ando Shinji came to New Grounds for his gallery opening in September 2008, he graciously accepted to display the Jewels portfolio at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts. Ando Shinji is a professor at the University. The prints from the portfolio were displayed with the biographies of each artist.

The gallery opening went well and the portfolio was inspiring to many students at the University.

The Tokyo National University of Fine Arts has an excellent printmaking program. Ando Shinji has shared pictures of the studio there.

New Members Show

The New Year brought in many new faces and art to the gallery. This was the last day of the holiday sale and people were excited to see the great prices for the art on the tables!

Denise Weaver-Ross is an artist here and volunteered to check out people who were buying art. She was busy all night.

New Members of the gallery got to talk with each other and to others about their art process. Here is Brian Giza and Dale Zomerhuis chatting away.

Kathe Noe had no problem talking with people about her art-making process.

Bruce Childs got to give a demonstration on gravure and monotype. He was not feeling well that night but gave a beautiful demo. That people enjoyed.

Art enthusiasts were everywhere. Rob Thalmann and an admirer of his work were having a good discussion about his gravure prints.

Thanks to all who volunteered and those who came to the gallery. It was a great night!

Review of Holiday Sale

The Holiday Sale was wonderful! There was art covering all of the tables in the whole building!

Many people were shopping for others and some were shopping for themselves.

Ray Maseman brought his family to do some holiday shopping for their family and friends. Here is a picture of Maggie. I think she might be saying loudly, “Do you want this?!”

There was plenty of hot cider to go around and people were having a great time!

The Jewels portfolio was on display for a month. This portfolio contains 24 multi-colored images by members of New Grounds Print Workshop. All pieces were done with non-toxic methods - most of them were printed with water-based inks. The purpose of this portfolio was to create jewel-like limited edition prints. Each image had to be composed with two or more color plates, although chine collé could be used in place of a plate. The images vary from realistic to abstract, and from minimal single plate/chine collé combinations to complex mixed media approaches. This exhibition has been donated to the UNM Childrens Hospital.

Sarah Anderson entertains with humorous show and monotype demonstration

In front of a packed and attentive audience, Sarah Anderson demonstrated her unique way of creating figurative monotypes.


She begins by painting ink on the plate with a brush which she then rolls out with a brayer to create a thin and even surface.

Once all elements of the image are on the plate, she creates pattern and textures by removing ink with q-tips or small pieces of cardboard. This is how she creates the flower design of the dress and highlights in hair. Once all parts of the image are to her satisfaction, she will draw the fine details with a “needle applicator,” a squeeze bottle topped with a fine metal tip specifically designed for the water-based Akua monotype inks used at New Grounds.


The finished plate is now placed on the press bed.


Tanya Landin, the ever so capable New Grounds workshop and gallery assistant, places the printing paper on top of the inked plate. The press blankets are then lowered on top of the paper, and the press is hand-cranked to apply pressure to the inked plate which causes the ink to transfer to the printing paper. Since this is a monotype, the image is created completely out of ink and only one good impression can be pulled from this plate. Theoretically it is possible to print the remnants of the inked plate on a clean sheet of paper; the resulting image is called a “ghost print.”


The finished monotype is lifted off the plate to the amazement of the crowd. Sarah Anderson made this look very easy which comes with years of experience.
