Lyric Elements by Jessica Weybright

In her June exhibition, artist Jessica Weybright uses many layers of soft color and thin lines to create a space that is superficially calming, but on closer examination reveals motion and chaos. Strong lines create a framework that grounds looser brushstrokes, but also provides for a freedom to move and grow. The eye is held for a moment then released. Repetition of elements, such as white lines, circles, certain colors as well as line and brushstroke throughout the work create a sense of rhythm and movement.

New Grounds Artists Exhibit in England

New Grounds Artists exhibition in Wolverhampton, England

In the spring of 2007, College Printmaking lecturer Linda Nevill (BA Hons, MA) took a short break from teaching and embarked on a sabbatical which took her to the USA.

Linda traveled along America’s “Mother Road” Route 66 in two of the warmest US states – Arizona and New Mexico. She took photos and made sketches of the fascinating old gas stations, motels, diners and signs, capturing a rusting, fading image of a legendary road.

One memorable photographic moment was discovering a shed, behind an old gas station and general stores, in which she found a dusty car parts catalogue. Light spilled through a crack in the corrugated roof highlighting the listings of carburetors, spark plugs, clutches and water pumps – essential components for travel on Route 66.

Linda then spent time at the New Grounds Print Workshop and Gallery on Route 66 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to create some photogravure prints based on some of the photos taken. New Grounds is a leading US workshop in innovatory and non-toxic printmaking directed by Regina Held.

This exhibition displays New Grounds artists’ latest etchings, monotypes, gravures and mezzotints and 3 of the prints Linda made in New Mexico.

April Show -- Land and Sea: Monotypes by Jacqui Lewnes

Jacqui Lewnes is already known by many for her bold, gestural, colorful depictions of dogs and cats. In her newest work she widens her range to include fauna both wild and domesticated. The wild creatures come from far and wide, but the domesticated ones may include an animal you know. If you missed Jacqui's opening, it is not too late to see her work--the show remains up until the end of April. At her opening, Jacqui showed us how she creates her images by laying down layers of color with monotypes. With minor assistance from Masterprinter Ray Maseman and our crack team of apprentice press-crankers, Jacqui accomplished the super-human feat of creating a four color image in under 30 minutes:

The first plate is rolled up with orange ink, and Jacqui removes ink in the space that Glo Crow will occupy.

The initial state of the print is pulled from the orange plate.

Jacqui covers the plate with blue ink, and then removes everything except Glo Crow.

Printmaking is a collaborative endeavor. Here, volunteer apprentices from the audience crank the press.

March Show : Odyssey - Etchings by Ray Maseman

Maseman’s whimsical etchings are best described as children’s stories for adults. In his work metaphorical and playful exteriors are inhabited with trees, swings, balloons, ladders and various other objects. Creaturely protagonists travel through these worlds, perhaps looking or searching for something. They don’t know where or when they will find it, or even what “it” is, but they have an abiding faith that they will reach their destination.

February Show: Au Naturel - Gravure by Jorge Tristani

The Rachel Allen Printmaking Scholarship

Open to all women living in the Albuquerque and Santa Fe areas, who can demonstrate participation in the art community. Please do not call- send a Self Addressed Stamped Envelope or e-mail for complete scholarship guidelines. Scholarship Applications must be postmarked by April 30, 2008.

The Rachel Allen Scholarship will be awarded to one person every year. It consists of one printmaking class and three consecutive months of membership at New Grounds (this amounts to more than $1000 in value).
